What is the best way to housetrain puppies?
When you housetrain a puppy, it can get so frustrating that you lose your mind. "How do I get him/her to understand that they must go outside, not on the carpet?" "Why did I get into this?" "Will my dog EVER learn???"
Yes, they will. Be stern, and make them understand what they have done wrong. If you have kids, then you understand that it is like pottytraining a child. However, unlike a child, the puppy is not abloe to communicate wiht you unless you put the dog out right when it has done wrong. Reward the dog when he/she starts to whimper in needing to go, in other words they want you to take them out. That means that the dog is learning. Yes, this process does take time, but it will last the dog the rest of its life. Close off an area where the dog can stay when you first get it. Make sure that this area is a place where you can clean up its messes, so that gorgeous new carpet of yours won't have a stain or two, or three, or four......
Don't expect the puppy to learn right away. Just like pottytraining a child, the puppy must learn what to do when he/she needs to go, instead of just letting loose. If the dog live outside, then you don't have to worry about it. However, we would reccomend that you may want to try training the dog not to go in certain areas where you may not want its messes. Practically the same process can be used for this.
